Have you already planned your marriage proposal in detail? Have you decided exactly where you will pop the question to your intended, what outfit you will be wearing and whether a photographer will be there? Great! But have you thought about the most important thing: the engagement ring and box? Surprise your partner with a unique engagement ring which you have designed yourself. You can find plenty of advice below!

How do you design your own engagement ring?

You might already have a fairly good idea of what the engagement ring for your beloved should look like. You know their style perfectly in terms of material, stone, colour… But you may be lacking in artistic talent. Then look for ideas on Pinterest: search for keywords which best describe your dream ring. Create a mood board showing rings similar to your dream engagement ring, and pop it along to a jeweller of your choosing.

Ring style

It’s best not to take chances when choosing the style for your engagement ring. After all, there are many differing ring styles, and naturally you want your loved one to say “yes” when you suddenly produce it. Will you go for a classic, traditional ring, a vintage engagement ring, something glamorous and bling bling, an exclusive one, a modern one or one with coloured gemstones such as sapphire or ruby? The choice is vast. If you really can’t decide, check with your partner’s best friend or a family member. Your jeweller can also always assist you with advice on designing your own engagement ring.

Metal colour

Have you chosen the style? Next, you can decide what colour the ring should be. The best-known metals for engagement rings are gold and platinum. There are various shades of gold, such as yellow gold, white gold and rose gold. Gold alone is too soft for making jewellery. Therefore, it is mixed with other alloys. Which is why different shades of gold can be created when designing a ring. A classic gold ring is actually yellow gold, while rose gold gives your ring a lovely rose tint, and white gold is pure gold mixed with silver, copper and palladium. This gives the ring a silvery, paler and more lustrous hue. So another metal is platinum. Platinum is a bit like silver in terms of colour, but it is harder than actual silver.

Which gemstone

If you want to design your own engagement ring, then you will have to choose which gemstone you would like to have mounted into it. Diamonds are a symbol of everlasting love, which is why they are very popular in engagement rings. Diamonds come in different cuts. Cutting is the way the stone is shaped and faceted. This affects how it sparkles, and how the light catches it. The better the quality of cut, the more your diamond will sparkle. You can for example choose a round shape, a heart shape, a princess cut, an oval shape or a pear shape.

Other than diamonds, you can also choose sapphire or ruby as the gemstone for your engagement ring. Tip: don’t just think about the aesthetic aspect of a ring, but also the practicality and resistance to wear. Some gemstones are more susceptible to scratches than others and so require more maintenance and care.

The carat

The carat of a gemstone refers to its weight. This also usually determines the size of the stone, as well as the bling factor.

Your budget

Have you sketched out a complete look for your ideal engagement ring? Then find out how much it is going to cost. Does the cost exceed the budget set beforehand? Then discuss with your jeweller where savings can be had. And which materials or gemstones he might propose, to make your ring look the same, yet make it easier on the budget.

Design your own custom-made ring

When you have your engagement ring made to your design, you really are getting a custom-made ring. You are having something created which is special and unique, something no one else has, or at least very few. Of course, an engagement ring is not something trivial. It is a symbol of your love, while at the same time it should reflect your personality and style.

Don’t forget a ring box

Of course, you can’t have a beautiful engagement ring without a lovely ring box. Should you settle for the standard ring box which comes with your ring, or would you prefer to have this made to your design too? You can have the box personalised by adding the date you met, or your names.
